Rail-based systems

Trams, trains and metros are becoming smarter as new technology is used to improve performance. Significantly greener than other forms of transport, rail-based systems are gaining momentum

Smart trains, trams and metros

IEC collaborates closely with the International Union of Railways (UIC) and the International  Association of Public Transport (UITP), in order to ensure the safety of passengers and satisfy regulatory requirements. IEC International Standards enable all the electrical and electronic devices and systems used in railway, metro and tram transport to work together safely and pave the way for the introduction of new technologies relying on increased digitization.

While railway transport is perceived as a greener form of transportation than most other means, railway and metro companies are nevertheless trying to reduce their Co2 impact even more, by using a number of energy efficient techniques, including energy harvesting. Here again, IEC Standards help industry implement these new technologies.

Increased digitization and automation makes railway and metro transport potentially more vulnerable to cyber attacks. IEC publishes documents relevant to cyber security systems specifically adapted to critical infrastructure.

IEC Technical Committees and Conformity Assessment Systems

IEC TC 9: Electrical equipment and systems for railways, prepares standards dealing specifically with railway networks, metropolitan transport networks and magnetically levitated transport systems.

Many other IEC TCs publish standards relevant to railway transport, including IEC TC 65: Industrial-process measurement, control and automation, which develops the IEC 62443 series of standards. The series is emerging as a core set of cybersecurity-related publications for the railway sector.

The IEC 62443 standards have their own certification programme, supplied by IECEE, one of the four conformity assessment (CA) systems run by the IEC. These CA systems operate schemes and programmes based on third-party testing and certification as well as mutual recognition agreements.

Laboratories and certification bodies test and certify products, equipment, services and personnel competency against IEC International Standards, to ensure their reliability, interoperability with other products, services and installations and that the relevant safety standards have been applied.
