Energy efficiency standards for improving and optimising the energy consumption of electric driven machine units

The new 1 hour IEC Academy webinar is presenting the coordination and alignment of energy efficiency standards for improving and optimising the energy consumption of electric driven machine units – e.g. pump, fan, compressor and describing joint efforts into defining calculation and measurement of energy losses in electro-mechanical systems.

Energy efficiency standards (IEC and ISO) enable regulators to develop effective policies and regulations for energy efficiency and energy and power savings throughout the world.

Electric Motor driven systems like pumps, fans, compressors and machines, define approximately 50% of the global electricity use. A focus on efficiency and energy savings is a key priority for policymakers and industry.

IEC ACEE TG6 initiated in 2019 the CAISEMS project to promote energy efficiency through coordination and alignment of system standards by the involved TCs for electric motor systems.

This initiative will pass into an IEC & ISO Joint Advisory Group: JAG 22 by October 2021. The JAG 22 involves IEC SC 22G (PDS, secr.), IEC TC 2 (motors) and ISO TC 117 (fans). ISO TC 115 (pumps) and ISO TC 118 (compressors) are invited to participate as well as any other interested IEC and ISO committee.

An enhanced coordination through the JAG should lead to standards that enable users

- to measure and calculate energy efficiency

- to measure and calculate energy consumption and losses

- to calculate, measure and reduce power consumption

A concrete example of how such coordination can look like will be presented as well.

Combatting fake media - can international standards help?

The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the surge of disinformation online, undermining trust in science and media. Compounding the issue is the easy availability of sophisticated software for editing photos and video, which is making the challenge of verifying sources and content more difficult.

This 90-minute IEC Academy webinar provides an overview of best practices currently employed in cutting-edge newsrooms and looks at powerful new verification tools being developed by the scientists and technology experts responsible for the JPEG picture format.

Michael Wegener, a senior editor with the German radio and television broadcaster, ARD, will describe the verification processes and tools currently used by public service broadcasters across Europe.
Touradj Ebrahimi, a professor at the EPFL in Lausanne and JPEG convenor, will look forward to a new international, consensus-based standard that will make it easier to verify the authenticity of photos and video. The standard should also make it easier to spot 'deepfakes', computer-generated clips that not only distort reality but could also destroy the reputations of their victims. Detecting deepfakes is expected to become more of a challenge as technology improves.

The interactive seminar will also be streamed on social media. Participants are invited to post questions, comments and concerns.
Our experts will try to answer as many as possible during the live seminar and afterwards on social media.

Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and the Interplay between Standardization, Conformity Assessment and Legislation

This three-hour workshop, organized by the IEC and the Directorate of International Law of Switzerland’s Department of Foreign Affairs, will explore how the interplay between standardization, conformity assessment and legislation frameworks could be better leveraged to help address society’s needs in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Distinguished international speakers from different backgrounds will share their perspectives along these three dimensions and will discuss how AI would benefit from a strengthened dialogue between standardization, conformity assessment and legal communities.

The workshop will be organized in three panel sessions moderated by an IEC board member who is also a leading data scientist. Interaction with the audience will be carried out by providing attendees with guiding questions prior to the workshop and gathering inputs throughout the workshop. After the event, a briefing paper will be circulated to summarize the main takeaways of the workshop.

New IEC and ISO Online Standards Development (OSD)

IEC and ISO are building an Online Standards Development (OSD) platform which will enable greater efficiency, accuracy and quality throughout the standards development process, while allowing collaborative authoring on the same content. It offers authoring, commenting and comment resolution in one tool which will be integrated into the IEC and ISO environments.

If you are involved in standards development, join this IEC Academy webinar and learn more about the innovative features of the OSD platform.

Securing your automation solution – IEC 62443 series

Driving integrity and confidentiality throughout the system components requires consideration not just of individual endpoints but also of their integration and composition into a whole, including the dynamics regarding endpoints and authorized communications. This adds an extra degree of complexity that has to be managed and maintained through R&D to obsolescence – across the evolution and improvement of the system itself, while the threat landscape changes with time, and with that, delivers new challenges and risks.
The IEC 62443 series defines the general requirements for an integrated approach to cyber-physical risk management to enable secure communications and operation amongst key actors and stakeholders.
