Why an FTP site?
The FTP site is used to have
documents available for all members of a committee. A member will
copy a document to the folder "upload". He can only copy
a document there but will not be able to see the content of this
folder.
The administrator checks the document, then moves
it to the folder "download". He/she will then inform the
members of the availability of a new document, for example via a
mailing list.
Please refer to Bits
& Bytes Vol. 10 for more information.
Software, access
To perform these operations, you need appropriate
FTP software; we recommend Leech FTP, which is a free software,
easy to install and use. You can download this software from http://cws.internet.com/file/11643.htm.
You can also access the server with a web browser
(for example, Internet explorer), using the syntax ftp://username:password@ftp.iec.ch.
Please refer to Bits
& Bytes Vol. 22 for more information.
Some corporate networks do not open the FTP function
but can limit the access to a given server with a given IP address.
Please check with your local IT support the policy applied in your
company; do not hesitate to contact TISS
if you have any question.
Administrator
The administrator of the site is responsible for
maintaining the contents of the folders (quality of the information,
virus free file, etc.).
He/she will also give the login and password to
authorized members and inform them when new documents are available
for download.
Please note that only working group documents should
be available on the FTP site, the Central Office will delete any
other file such as CDV, agendas, etc. which are available on the
IEC web site and should be accessed with a valid authorization.
Also refer to Administrative Circular
118/2001 for further details.
Set up request
If you are a TC/SC secretary and you think
an ftp site can help you in your work, please fill in the request
and send it by e-mail to your Technical officer at the Central Office.
