ABB – IECEx licence provides
easier access to global Ex markets
This Progress Cavity Pump, used
for pumping heavy crude oil, is
driven by two ABB motors.
ABB Motors, makes a variety of products, including motors for use in hazardous areas, known in industry jargon as "Ex equipment". They are mostly used in fan, pump and compressor applications in the oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. These motors must be tested and certified prior to use and, for this, ABB relies on the IEC’s scheme for certification to standards relating to equipment for use in explosive atmospheres (IECEx Scheme).
In March 2010, ABB Motors became the first motor manufacturer worldwide to be granted the IECEx Conformity Mark License.
This Mark confirms that a product has the appropriate protection for use in explosive atmospheres and that it has been manufactured under systems subject to on-going surveillance by Certification Bodies. It is recognized in all the countries participating in the IECEx System, and also means that the product can be supplied to the market without the need for additional tests.
This license considerably enhances ABB’s ability to market its products globally for the use in hazardous areas. It significantly reduces the time and complexity of certification and IECEx test and certification procedures are exhaustive enough to satisfy the most demanding of customers.
Swedish-Swiss company ABB is a global leader in power and automation technologies with more than 100 000 employees and offices in more than 100 countries around the world.
