How the IEC works

A platform for experts

IEC standardization work is accomplished through 174 TCs and SCs (Technical Committees and Subcommittees). The 10 000 or so electrotechnology experts participating in over 1 000 Working Groups come from all around the world. Most are from industry, but some come from government, test and research laboratories, academia and consumer groups.

They prepare technical documents on specific subjects within their respective scopes, which are then submitted to the IEC Members for voting with a view to their approval as International Standards. Each IEC Member NC (National Committee) represents its country’s industry, academia, regulators and consumers in the IEC.

The sum of many voices

IEC International Standards are consensus-based and pass through a stringent process for preparation and approval to ensure they are of the highest quality and represent the know-how of experts from all around the world.
