International standards and certification
A common language
International standards define a common language that can be understood by everyone everywhere. They are widely adopted by many countries around the world. They are also used by many thousand manufacturers and serve as the basis for quality controls, conformity assessment and certification.
Their application is an important criteria for governments, trade organizations, retailers and consumers.
While adoption of IEC International Standards by any country, IEC member or not, is entirely voluntary, the WTO recommendations make it very clear that they are essential to remove technical barriers to trade.
