IEC supporting international lighting and energy efficiency conference in Vienna

This occasion offers an ideal opportunity for meeting and exchanging ideas about the future of lighting, both from an energy point of view and from a safety and technology aspect.

Ronnie Amit ,
IEC General Secretary and CEO

The IEC is pleased to be associated with the CIE, the International Commission on Illumination, in organizing the CIE 2010 "Lighting Quality and Energy Efficiency" conference which is to take place next March in Vienna, Austria.

Founded in 1913, the CIE is a technical, scientific and cultural non-profit making organization with headquarters in Vienna, Austria. Its member bodies represent 38 countries or geographical regions throughout the world.

The CIE publishes Standards, Technical Reports and Recommendations on light and lighting which are prepared by experts in their respective Technical Committees, at present organized into seven Divisions. One of the CIE joint publications with the IEC is IEC 60050-845, International Electrotechnical Vocabulary – Part 845: Lighting.

Speaking from the IEC Central Office in Geneva, General Secretary and CEO Ronnie Amit commented, "The IEC is pleased to be associated with such an event. It will provide a forum for experts from all over the world to meet together and discuss the many technologies now being developed for light and lighting. This occasion offers an ideal opportunity for meeting and exchanging ideas about the future of lighting, both from an energy point of view and from a safety and technology aspect."

An International Scientific Committee, chaired by János Schanda, has been put together specifically for this event. One of its members is IEC Technical Officer Michel Coupy.

CIE 2010 is to be held at the Hilton Vienna hotel from 14 to 17 March 2010. As well as the IEC, other participants include major lighting manufacturers from all over the world.

This conference is the first event of its kind and is intended to be the first of a series, with subsequent regional congresses in Latin America and Asia to follow.

CIE 2010 highlights are to include:

  • Surveys of experimental projects
  • Lighting techniques and scenarios
  • Integrated approaches in lighting design
  • Lighting quality criteria
  • Future possible lighting schemes
  • Methods to compare lighting installations
  • Case studies of energy-efficient lighting
  • Review of energy-efficient lighting control systems
  • Energy efficiency and environmental compatibility

Further information can be obtained from Michel Coupy, IEC Technical Officer.
