Conformity assessment work

Conformity assessment (CA) is any activity to determine, directly or indirectly, that a process, product, service or personal competencies meets relevant technical standards and fulfils relevant requirements.
There are three forms of CA:

  • 1st party CA is a declaration or guarantee by a manufacturer or supplier
  • 2nd party CA is a declaration or guarantee by an end-user
  • 3rd party CA is certification by an independent third party, not being the manufacturer, supplier or end-user.

The Conformity Assessment Board (CAB) manages the CA activities of the IEC which include four CA Systems, each of which operates Schemes based on third-party conformity assessment certification. The four CA Systems are:

  • IECEE: the System of Conformity Assessment Schemes for Electrotechnical Equipment and Components
  • IECEx: the System For Certification To Standards Relating To Equipment For Use In Explosive Atmospheres
  • IECQ: the Quality Assessment System For Electronic Components
  • IECRE: the System For Certification To Standards Relating To Equipment For Use In Renewable Energy Applications
