SG 9

Communication Technologies

The scope of SG 9 is to provide recommendations for using and standardizing communication technologies by working on:
• Collecting use cases from IEC groups (e.g. smart metering) in order to be able to assess communication technology requirements
• Categorizing and prioritizing these use cases
• Identifying trends with respect to the reference ISO/OSI layered model that might have an impact on these use cases and vice versa, including but not limited to:
o Physical layer implementations such as fiber optics or wireless media
o Protocols for single layers such as TCP/IP or TSN
o Specific applications such as Email
o Complete communication stack specifications such as Bluetooth
o Specific architecture and networking aspects such as mesh or cellular network topologies
• Identifying communication technology properties that might have an impact on these use cases and vice versa, including but not limited to:
o Specific requirements such as bandwidth or latency
o Security aspects such as network access control
o Regulatory aspects such as frequency spectrum allocation
Activities will consider current and former related work in IEC groups such as ACSEC, Systems Committees (SyCs), Systems Evaluation Groups (SEGs), and other Strategic Groups (SGs). The recommendations should consider trends that are not yet addressed by other IEC groups.
