Technical Work - SMB
Smart Grid
The SMB (Standardization Management Board) SG3: Smart Grid has set up three task teams responsible respectively for Roadmap, Use cases and Architecture.
The Strategy Group has worked intensely on the development of the IEC Smart Grid Mapping Solution, which was presented in October during GridWeek by the IEC President Jacques Régis.
Currently, 24 TCs (Technical Committees) and 100 IEC Standards have been identified to have a very direct impact on Smart Grids. TCs are asked to provide practical guidelines to increase current usability of standards, fast-track new standards to close gaps and set up a feedback process for continuous improvement.
SG3 has working liaisons with NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology), ISO (International Organization for Standardization), ITU (International Telecommunication Union) and CEN-CENELEC.
New Smart Grid portal
The Smart Grid portal on the IEC website was restructured to reflect the work done by the IEC and the SG 3. The portal is broken down into several sections that comprise:
- Mapping Tool: a multidimensional graphic interface, a map of the Smart Grid
- Roadmap: with recommendations for immediate actions
- Insights: for Smart Grid project managers and for equipment and system manufacturers
- IEC Standards: an overview of all IEC International Standards for the Smart Grid
- Background information: on Smart Grids and why they are needed
- Challenges: awareness, regulations, technical, interoperability
- Development: who guides the strategy of IEC Smart Grid work, which Technical Committees are involved.
