Cooperation with WTO
In March, IEC participated as an observer in a workshop organized by the Committee on TBT (Technical Barriers to Trade) of the WTO (World Trade Organization) on the role of International Standards in the economic development of its members. After the workshop, the TBT Committee held its regular meeting. The IEC acknowledged the need for international standards-setting bodies to maintain their efforts in including developing countries in their standardization activities and invited all developing countries involved in the IEC Affiliate Country Programme to make full use of it.
In June 2009 in Geneva, the IEC presented an update on its activities to the WTO TBT Committee meeting. The IEC was represented by Françoise Rauser in her capacity of IEC International Liaison Officer. She presented a brief statement concerning IEC activities for the first semester of 2009. Copies of the full report, together with the June 2009 e-tech, were provided as room documents to the delegates. The agenda was reordered at the last minute to discuss the Fifth Triennial Review of the TBT Agreement before going on to examine its current implementation.
The fifth triennial review of the operation and implementation of the Agreement on TBT was adopted by WTO Members during the WTO TBT Committee meeting held in November in Geneva.
Françoise Rauser, IEC International Liaison Officer, attended as an observer and was pleased to report that the IEC already helps developing countries to comply with the Agreement on a number of key points.
